searching for the ineffable
Someone pointed me to this article by Ron Paul. Curious and still a bit disbelieving, I googled. Hunh. The American Community Survey does exist, and it is scary.
Answering it, if they ask you to, is apparently compulsory. Just take a look at the list of questions in the various PDF files. Gah.
So, I was curious as to whether finishing schools still existed. The first Google hit for “finishing school” is Miss Vera’s Finishing School For Boys Who Want To Be Girls.
Ah, yes. The times, they are a-changin’.
Our apartment has markedly fewer boxes. Remarkably, it also has a fully functional kitchen! First I’ll get back into the swing of work (oh boy, am I behind…), then mo’ blogging, possibly with significant news. (I mean, aside from the fact that my brother, sisinlaw and nephew will be moving from Italy to New York in short order. Whoo! We’ll live within driving distance! Mmm, I miss them so.)
Many news bits lately had me wanting to blog them, but living out of boxes (we weren’t really able to unpack all week, due to work going on in the apartment) is no incentive to blog or do anything productive for that matter.

Not bad, as reading goes. This LA Weekly article summarizes pretty well why I admire Earth and Fire’s work so much.
It’s so odd to tune into a radio broadcast set up by someone you know and hear a relatively obscure band you’ve been listening to for years, but in utterly different contexts.
Here’s what I’d like: an engine where I can search for a place name, and find all the various ways people have referred to a given place. For example, Venice is also Venezia, and in Boccaccio’s Decameron it’s Vinegia. Or, Roland (in Orlando Furioso) goes to an island named Ebuda. And I forget: is this a made-up island? Or does it actually exist? And if it does exist, is it called Ebuda or something else?
I could google it of course, but that’s imperfect more often than not, and often produces a ton of irrelevant results to sift through. Oh, semantic Web, how I dream of you.
