Scaramuccia [It.] = skirmish. Both are of unknown origin, probably derived from Old French (according to the OED, anyway). See also scrimish, scrimmage, and forms of rubbish.

Also, the French word in question would probably be ‘escarmouche’ — which sounds like what happens when a snail fights back as you’re attempting to apply the garlic butter.
