Happy? anniversary, darling. – Words' End

Happy? anniversary, darling.

Thirteen years ago today my parents and I got off the plane in JFK and immigrated into the U.S. After we and our documents were thoroughly checked, the NYANA rep took a cab with us to our hotel. “To freedom,” he said, as we were exiting the restricted area.

In other news, my wrists and forearms are hurting in a typical RSI fashion. Tendonitis, more precisely, said my doctor this morning. I’m not entirely sure what this will mean for this Web log, but “laconic” does come to mind. I’m fascinated to find out whether I can actually stand to be laconic.

  1. Vika,
I wish you many more happy celebrations of arrival.

Ever consider exploring Adaptive Technologies? Some voice recognition software to help you express yourself, your thoughts, your questions, your musings? You could even blog about the search for the technical aides and feel of the shift away from hands on the keyboard to other input devices.

    In any event, good luck.

  2. Not sure how happy the anniversary is, Francois — I’ve always been conflicted about coming to the States. Although Boston/Providence is now home, and I’m very thankful for the opportunities, have never been able to call myself “American.”

Yes, voice recognition would be nifty! But I can’t afford it right now, so no dice. The tendonitis seems to be treatable and manageable, so we’ll see how things go. I certainly don’t intend to disappear, nor could I bear to.

  3. Yeek! Yeek for Veek! Tendonitis is surprisingly easy to exacerbate, but also reasonably easy to keep under control, with some forethought. When next I see you, remind me to show you stretches for arms. In the meantime, anti-inflammatories are your friends, as is ice. Contrast treatments would be best (alternating heat and cold, have I mentioned before?), but if nothing else, use a cold pack or some frozen veggies against the area after extensive use (or even moderate, if that makes you sore).

  4. Ahha! O anonymous poster, your IP address (not to mention the specific offer of help with this) belies your identity. Yes, I was hoping to ask you about this next time I saw you — have been told to ice forearms and given some stretches to do, but am always looking for more, of course. I think I’d also like to strengthen the wrists; one of the sports-oriented handouts the doctor had said it’s good to lift small weights in a specific manner.

If you’ve suggestions as to specific anti-inflammatories, I’m all ears, as I’ve never used them before. And thanks, this means a lot to me. :)
