in and out of consciousness

My ability to be articulate (comprehensible and to the point) is heavily dependent on my physical state at the moment. Specifically, whether I’ve gotten enough sleep.

It’s disheartening and makes me lose entire days in sadness and feelings of inadequacy. That these feelings are irrational, and that generally making a fool of myself is never an entirely bad thing – learning experiences and all that – doesn’t make any difference. Any.

Some days are just sad. I wish these waves weren’t so all-consuming. Yes, thank you, I’d love some cheese with that whine.

Farscape humor

Sorry, if you don’t know Farscape, this won’t be funny. On the other hand, what are you waiting for? Go Netflix it or something!

Ethan, after watching something like the 5th episode of the 4th season:

“If they have a Sebacean and human child, it’ll totally be mutant! It’ll have to… *waves hands* eat ice cream all the time to keep cool!”

Question for the digirati and other geeks

I’ve never done any 3D modelling, and would like to play with it. Is there a cheap or free program for OS X that is quickly learned? My time is stretched thin right now, so I’d rather stay away from Photoshop-like complexity. My requirements are easy, really: I’d like to manually create a bunch of nodes (doesn’t matter what they look like as long as I can name them), define connections between them, and then see a 3D representation of the resulting structure. Preferably, a representation that I can turn about and see from different angles.

Later on, I’m gonna want something that will take an XML-encoded text, process it according to the rules I give it, and spew out a 3D representation of that text. But that’s sort of a pipe dream; for now, I’m more interested in a very basic DYI. Does such a beast exist?

dreams vs reality

I dreamed about an ex-lover, a friend to whom I’m about to write email (only partly because of the dream). He’s been, to a greater or lesser extent, in my dreams for something like a week now. I’ve no idea why. All I know is that I awake happy and slightly nostalgic, that I miss him and want him and Ethan to meet.

I told Ethan about this yesterday morning. His eyes reflected the shine in my own. He smiled, the corners of his eyes creasing; he wants to meet J. too. This is important – in some ways, this is it, it’s why I treasure him so. He gets what it means to love, nurtures the depth of feelings I carry for him and for others.

I wake, and before writing email I read blogs. My legs underneath the blanket freeze as I follow links from a post. A sixteen-year-old girl is accused of being terrorist threat and imprisonedimprisoned! – for being a teenager. For not getting along with her parents, for wanting to get married at 16, for a misunderstanding in the family that involved the police because they trust in the system, a decision which cost their daughter her freedom after the police involved the FBI.

The girl’s Muslim. As the source of my links wrote, “this is the Patriot Act in action. This is religious persecution. This is your America.”

News of the Weird.

[The subject of this post has nothing to do with this awesome site, and I hope that by advertising them I get to use their name in my lowly post without fear of wrath.]

Well, this is something to look forward to when we’re biking around Denmark.

Straight out of a Greek myth, this one. “And the birds pecked out his liver over and over and over again until the END OF TIME.”

Thanks to Wil for the midday injection of surreality.

PSA: comments moderated for now.

Now that this very strange commentary debacle is over (and people seem to have gotten bored with attacking my love, too), I’m turning on comment moderation. Spammers have figured out how to both get through my comment-spam-posting blocks *and* prevent WordPress from sending me a ping that a comment has been made. So I have to keep a watchful eye myself, and frankly, it’s exhausting.

When we upgrade to WordPress 1.5, this might be easier. But first we have to find the time to do it.

OK, mister. Either you outlaw email, or you pass me that waterpipe right now.

From The Guardian:

The distractions of constant emails, text and phone messages are a greater threat to IQ and concentration than taking cannabis, according to a survey of befuddled volunteers.

Doziness, lethargy and an increasing inability to focus reached “startling” levels in the trials by 1,100 people, who also demonstrated that emails in particular have an addictive, drug-like grip.

Wanna see something weird?

Today I witnessed Escalation of Emotional Stakes on the net in a particularly colorful manner.

Ethan wrote this post in his blog, somewhat alarmingly titled “Sexist Assholes on Ye Interwebbe.” He was recounting his experience being a member of the community called themaxx: [this might be offensive]. It’s one of those places where members post found or original pictures they find interesting, and then have other members rate them and comment on them.

Ethan’s post gathered a few flames at mindlace.net; and, looking over his shoulder, I read the bunch of comments that got posted on themaxx.com directly. Many were flames. (You have to be a member to view the comments, so I don’t have the link to that.)

Then I get a new comment to a post I made in January, by one Bertram Livestock who, like a knight in shining armor, warns me away from my friend mindlace. I posted a lengthy reply to him there, and you know, it’s some of the best stuff I’ve written lately. So go read both Bertram’s comment and mine; I assure you, it’s worth it. I’m still giggling at the power of Google [which is how I’m assuming he found me].
