Ah, right! Thanks, Carl, I hadn’t thought of the transplanting possibility. That’s likely what happened; it was pretty much a root ball. Having only lived here for a year and a bit, I have no idea when it would’ve been transplanted.

I had one of those blood sugar crashes on the T once, it was awful. Otherwise, I never get them.

I suspect the tree had been transplanted into that spot not very many years ago, perhaps to replace an older tree? It probably had a small root ball for transplantation that hadn’t had very long to grow outwards – otherwise, you’re right, it should have grown out as far as the diameter of the branches.
