Most of these people (not always women) don’t know the exact intricacies of how they entered the country. By being told that if they tried to leave, the police will call INS and have them jailed for being in the country, the employers effectively prevent them from even trying to search out help. And with the current state of immigration laws, it seems a credible threat. Why exchange one prison for another?
