The following chart demonstrates which texts and phenomena in the Roland canon served as primary sources for the texts I used in this project. It is assumed that the roots of the French Song of Roland lie in part of the oral epic tradition of that time. The dotted lines represent an assumed double connection of Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato both to the Morgante and to the Italian oral tradition of the cantari, neither of which can rightly be placed higher in importance than the other.
