They don't charge you in advance, either. I just used it successfully to get a decent cheap room in New York, but they have much better coverage in Europe. I stayed there in March pretty much at random having surfed around the web looking for a place to stay. Convenient to the tram, with nice staff and pleasantly decorated rooms. The only warnings I have are that the rooms are small and the stairs are typically Dutch (steep), but they let me keep my big suitcase downstairs in the reception area so I didn't have to drag it up to my room.
